THE FUNDED RESEARCH PROJECT
Also for 2024 Agorà has decided, together with some partners, to stand alongside the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, financing a research grant for an excellent researcher in the field of breast cancer to concretely support research and all the women who are facing and fighting
this disease daily.
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents a significant clinical challenge due to limited therapeutic options and a poor prognosis. New studies in nanomedicine show promising results regarding the use of plant-derived extracellular vesicles as natural adjuvants for therapies. Extracellular vesicles are small particles commonly used by cells, both animal and plant, to exchange information. In particular, preliminary studies have demonstrated the anti-tumor effect of vesicles derived from Citrus limon—the lemon tree—(CLENs) against TNBC. This project aims to evaluate the therapeutic potential of CLENs as a natural adjuvant to the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, for a targeted and enhanced therapy against TNBC. To this end, a novel 3D printing technology will be used to create tumor models that capture the complexity of the tumor and its surrounding environment, allowing for detailed studies of the interactions between therapeutic agents and the tumor. This project will enable the exploration of new therapeutic options to increase the efficacy of TNBC treatments.
