Project objective
Study the role of extracellular vesicles in the dialogue between ovarian tumor and tissue
adipose tissue, clarifying the mechanisms of metastasis formation.
PRESENTATION OF THE FINANCED PROJECT
Also for 2022 Agorà has decided, together with some partners, to stand alongside the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, financing a research grant for an excellent researcher in the field of ovarian cancer to concretely support research and all the women who are facing and fighting
this disease daily.
Ovarian cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Due to the lack of specific symptoms, this disease is generally diagnosed at an advanced stage, when metastases have already appeared in the omentum, an area of the abdominal cavity particularly rich in adipose tissue. Fat cells in the omentum promote the metastasis of ovarian cancer, but the mechanisms by which this occurs are not yet fully understood.
In particular, the role of extracellular vesicles, small "bubbles" released by cells and containing various types of molecules, commonly used to exchange information, is little studied. The goal of the supported project will be to analyze and catalog the functions of these vesicles in the interaction between ovarian cancer and adipose tissue, in order to clarify the molecular basis of metastasis formation.
